Silicon Valley is known for its fast-paced culture and it seems that startups in the valley will do anything to get a competitive edge over other firms… including promoting the use of prescription drugs in the workplace. In this post, we’re going to be exploring Modafinil: a so called “smart drug” that has grown in popularity in recent years, and it has found itself on the shelves of not only Silicon Valley startup employees, but also in the hands of college students and self-employed entrepreneurs not only in Dallas, but across the world.
Usually when you think of smart drugs, you think of amphetamine-based prescription drugs like Adderall, Vyvanse, and Ritalin, and with an increasing supply of these drugs becoming prescribed and available, it isn’t all too difficult for somebody wanting to experiment with ADHD medication to get their hands on it without a prescription or valid use case.
Despite the consistently increasing supply, biohackers (what is a biohacker?) are ditching prescription ADHD medications and flocking to Modafinil. Although it is a schedule IV substance, it is fairly easy to buy Modafinil online using sites like Afinil that provide Modalert (modafinil) and Waklert (armodafinil), among other generic varieties of the drug. These generics are manufactured in India, but anybody with a credit card can purchase the pills for around $1.00 per tablet, making it an inexpensive way for individuals to experiment with the drugs cognitive enhancing and wakefulness properties.
Now that we understand a bit more about Modafinil, let’s take a look at what the drug is made to do, and what it was approved by the FDA to treat. Unlike prescription medications prescribed to individuals with ADHD to keep them focused on the task at hand, Modafinil is used to treat individuals with narcolepsy who have abnormal sleeping patterns. The drug is used to keep them alert and from falling asleep during the daytime. Due to its eugeroic properties, it helps keep its users awake and on their feet, without the harsh side effects and “come downs” experienced by amphetamines.
It’s easy to see why Modafinil is quickly becoming the drug of choice among entrepreneurs and students alike. While Pegasus News does do news coverage on controversial topics like Modafinil and its usage off-label by individuals looking to enhance their cognitive capabilities, we do not necessarily promote these use cases. As always, do your own due diligence — caveat emptor — and talk to your doctor before taking any medications that you’re not familiar with.
